NewPipe
for Android
by Christian Schabesberger and other contributors
NewPipe is a lightweight, open-source Android client for YouTube and other media platforms. It offers ad-free streaming, background playback, and downloads — all without requiring Google services or an account.
About NewPipe
NewPipe is a lightweight Android application for watching and listening to online media without relying on proprietary services or official platform apps. It functions as an alternative client for platforms such as YouTube, YouTube Music, PeerTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp, and media.ccc.de, allowing users to stream, search, and download content in a simple interface.
The app is fully open-source and released under the GNU GPLv3 license. Because it does not depend on proprietary libraries such as Google Play Services, it works on devices without Google apps installed, including many custom Android ROMs.
NewPipe focuses on efficient media playback. It supports video streaming up to 4K resolution, background audio playback, and a floating popup player for picture-in-picture viewing. Users can also download videos, audio files, and subtitles for offline access.
Privacy is a central feature. The app does not require accounts and does not track users or collect personal data by default. This allows media to be streamed and managed locally without linking activity to external services.
