spotDL is a free, open-source Spotify downloader that turns Spotify tracks, albums, playlists and artists into organized local audio files. Audio is sourced from YouTube Music and other providers, then tagged with metadata, album artwork and lyrics. Runs on Windows, macOS and Linux.
About spotDL
spotDL is a command-line and web-based tool that converts Spotify links into ordinary local audio files. It reads track, album, playlist and artist details from Spotify, finds a matching recording through a supported audio provider, and downloads it as a tagged music file.
The project is free and open-source under the MIT License, developed by the spotDL team and community contributors. The full source is public, and the tool runs entirely on your own computer rather than through a remote conversion service.
spotDL embeds metadata, album artwork and lyrics, supports six output formats including MP3, M4A, Opus, OGG, FLAC and WAV, and can synchronize a local folder with a changing Spotify playlist. Configurable filename templates, multiple audio providers and a local web UI round out the feature set.
It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Docker and Termux, and does not download audio directly from Spotify itself — Spotify only supplies the metadata. FFmpeg is required for processing, and downloads are stored locally so your library stays portable across devices.
